The have won many ribbons, honorary awards and acknowledgements throughout their 30-year history.
The Birchfield Family of Carter, Tennessee learned old time mountain tunes and ballads from their father and uncles who played as part of the local mountain culture. Joe and Creed were born in the early 1900s and raised on Roan Mountain in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Joe's son, Bill, carries on the tradition with his wife, Janice, as the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers. When Joe died, Bill switched from guitar to fiddle, and Janice continues to play washtub bass, with newer members in other instruments. For the shows in Nashville, Matt Kinman will join the Hilltoppers on guitar and Amy Michels on banjo.
The Hilltoppers have delighted in passing their old-time mountain tunes to the younger generation. They have several recordings available on different labels, including The Roan Mountain Hilltoppers vinyl record and "Comin' Round the Mountain" on cassette, featuring the original members, "Money in Both Pockets" with Joy and Amy on cassette, and "Down Home" is a remake of the original vinyl album with 9 bonus tracks featuring the original band line-up.
